ANIMAL SCIENCE
Pre-requisite: Sustainable Agriculture Biology or Biology, or by teacher recommendation. May be taken concurrently with Animal Handling course. A capstone course in the scientific study of the scientific principles that govern livestock production based on college level Introduction to Animal Science course. Understanding the science behind the choices livestock producers make in daily production ensures the United States continues to produce high quality, safe and economical food and animal by products. Animal behavior and human interaction plays a vital role in farm safety of humans and animals. This course offers a scientific survey of the livestock industry, the supply of animal products and their uses, with a special emphasis on the origin, characteristics, adaptation, and contributions of farm animals to the agriculture industry and consumers, with special study of the applications of the physical and biological sciences of farm animal production. A hands-on work experience type course where students gain skills and knowledge working with major livestock species in the areas of , in addition to gaining an understanding of animal nutrition, health, selection behavior, reproduction, housing, care, economic trends, production practices and issues in animal agriculture. In addition, learners will gain experience through leadership development, SAE projects, and career exploration in the area of animal agriculture.
