Judging teams

Career Development Events (CDE’s) are opportunities for students to build technical skills in agriculture while also developing interpersonal skills that will benefit them in the future.

Public speaking, confidence, team work, and responsibility are just a few of the characteristics students will gain while participating in CDE’s.  These students will have the opportunity to compete against other FFA members from around the state at various contest sites, some of which are college campuses.

No prior experience is necessary to participate in these teams, students will learn everything they need to know through practices and also participation in contests.  

Below is a list of teams typically coached by Exeter FFA advisors.

Judging teams vary year to year based on the amount of interest shown by the students.

FALL

Cotton Judging

Coaches: Kevy Mendes, Jason Mendes

In the cotton contest, students must evaluate all aspects of cotton production from plants to cotton seeds. Students are asked to judge cotton in the form of seeds, bowls, plants, and lint in order from most desirable, to least desirable. They are also asked to give a set of oral reasons for all. Students will be scored on a test on cotton production, placings, and oral reasons. 

WINTER

Citrus Judging

Coach: Kevy Mendes

In the citrus contest, students must evaluate all aspects of citrus production from trees to common fruit. Students are asked to judge citrus in the form of oranges, lemons, grapefruit, and mandarins in order from most desirable, to least desirable. They are also asked to give a set of oral reasons for 3 classes. Students will be scored on identifying common defects, placings, and oral reasons. 

SPRING

Welding

Coach: Dan Crookham

The welding contest allows students to show off welding skills as well as knowledge. Students are asked to take a test regarding welding knowledge and then perform certain welds.

Floral Team

Coach: Shelly Lyons

The Floral contest requires students to identify plants, judge flower arrangements and solve problems. Students demonstrate skills in flower arranging, propagation and the preparation of floral and foliage products for sale.

Meats Judging 

Coach: Lauren Pepe

The meats judging contests consists of the evaluation of livestock carcasses and meat wholesale cut classes. There are many characteristics that we look at while evaluating and ranking the class, including trimness and muscling factors, along with the overall quality of the meat
