Egg enterprise

The Exeter FFA Egg project started in September 2012 when students received their day old chicks.  Through their excellent care and management the hens began laying eggs in February 2013.  Today the student managed project is home to nearly 100 cage free laying hens.  With several different breeds, a customer of the Exeter FFA Eggs will enjoy seeing the variety of color in their egg carton, as egg shells include variations between white, green, blue, pink, brown and gold.

Animal welfare and product quality are high priorities for the members of the project.  Hens are fed a high quality laying ration in addition to supplemented with oyster shells for egg shell strength, and chicken scratch, fruits, and vegetables to add variety to their diet.  In their large outdoor enclosure hens are able to engage in normal animal behavior including running, walking, spreading their wings, and jumping, unlike birds in a commercial cage egg production situation.

Eggs are collected daily and processed regularly by students according to California State Laws. The FFA Chapter holds a valid California Egg Handling permit, and follows its guidelines.  Each egg is hand washed, graded and packed with care by students of Exeter FFA.
